Gunther Verheyen (°1970) ventured into IT and software development after graduating as Industrial Engineer in 1992.
His Agile journey started with eXtreme Programming and Scrum in 2003. Years of dedication followed, of working with several teams and organizations, of using Scrum in diverse circumstances. Building on the experience gained, Gunther became the driving force behind some large-scale enterprise transformations.
Gunther is a partner of Ken Schwaber, Scrum co-creator, at Scrum.org. He is Professional Scrum trainer for Scrum.org and directs the series of ‘Professional Scrum’ products.
Gunther co-created the ‘Evidence-Based Management’ framework of Scrum.org to help organizations improve their agility.
In 2013 Gunther published his highly appraised book “Scrum – A Pocket Guide,” a ‘smart travel companion’ to Scrum.
Gunther has over 20 years of experience in software development and IT management, of which 11 years of experience in IT consultancy. He initially worked as functional analyst and project manager, but only really felt at ease after he discovered eXtreme Programming in 2003 and led some projects on XP before adding Scrum in 2004 and being trained by Ken Schwaber.
He was an early adopter of Agile in the Benelux. And since the foundation of Scrum.org in 2009 Gunther has been following up on it closely, starting with joining the early assessment programs. In 2010 he achieved level I and II certification as Professional Scrum Master, followed by level I and II certifications as Professional Scrum Product Owner in 2011. He is Professional Scrum Trainer in both programs.
In 2010 Gunther joined Capgemini to consolidate various singular, grassroots Agile initiatives in Belgium and the Netherlands. He soon grew into a global leader position for Scrum within Capgemini. He was a valued publicist, mainly on Scrum, on the international Capgemini Technology Blog.
In 2013 Gunther engaged as Director of the Professional Series with Scrum.org. He is the Product Owner of all Professional Scrum courseware, assessments and certifications, including Professional Scrum Foundations, Professional Scrum Master, Professional Scrum Product Owner and Professional Scrum Developer. Gunther is co-developer of the Scrum.org framework “Agility Path” to guide enterprise-wide adoption of agile thinking.
